Emporia crews rescued the girl after finding her standing on a log that had floated against a highway bridge in the Cottonwood River on Sunday.

Emporia firefighters reported they used a boat early Sunday to rescue a girl from the Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls in Chase County, about 65 miles southwest of Topeka.

Firefighters arrived to find the girl standing on a log, which floated in the middle of the river up against a pillar of the K-177 highway bridge, said Capt. Ryan Schmidt, of the Emporia Fire Department.

Emporia firefighters were called to assist the Chase County Sheriff's Department after it was called to the scene about 5 a.m. Sunday.

Schmidt had no further details about the girl or the situation involved.

Chase County Sheriff Richard Dorneker did not return a telephone message left Sunday morning by The Topeka Capital-Journal.
