MI Firefighters Rescue Driver who Crashed Car into Pond

Grand Rapids crews saved the man after an “underlying medical condition” might have caused him to veer off the road and into the water Wednesday.

GRAND RAPIDS, MIThe driver of a car that ended up in a pond near an apartment building is in the hospital after firefighters rescued him Wednesday morning.

The driver, an adult male, was unable to unlock the doors of the vehicle in the pond, so firefighters broke the rear passenger’s side window to open the doors and pull the driver out.

When emergency personnel arrived to the scene, Grand Rapids Fire Capt. Brian DeForest said a bystander was in the water checking on the driver who was trapped in the driver’s seat. The car was floating in the middle of the pond, DeForest said, and the water inside was up to the driver’s waist.

“We were able to assist him up to the shore without any problem,” DeForest said of the rescue.

“Fortunately, it was a pretty simple rescue,” DeForest added. “He was well enough to be able to walk with our assistance back to shore.”

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital. DeForest said it may have been an “underlying medical condition” that caused the driver to veer off the roadway and into the pond.

The man was driving a white Cadillac CTS.

Emergency personnel, including those from Grand Rapids Fire Department, Grand Rapids Police Department, ambulance and River Rescue, received the call at 10:21 a.m. to the scene at Aspen Lakes Apartments on Knapp Street. A tow truck also was at the scene.
