CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MIA teen threatened suicide and led police on a high-speed chase before driving into Lake St. Clair where he was rescued on Sunday.

The 16-year-old boy stole his parents’ 2018 GMC Terrain while threatening suicide when Chesterfield Township Police were called at 11:32 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, according to a news release from the department.

The teen led police on a high-speed chase through Chesterfield Township and into Lenox Township where the pursuit was called off due to the danger to other drivers from the teen’s reckless, high-speed driving, police said. The chase picked up minutes later when he returned to Chesterfield.

Police were in pursuit when the teen drove off the end of 21 Mile Road into Lake St. Clair while traveling at a high speed, police said.

An officer immediately jumped into the lake to save the driver who resisted being pulled from the slowly sinking vehicle, police said. Chesterfield Township firefighters and other officers joined the effort and the teen was eventually removed and taken to a hospital.

The driver’s name has not been released. A towing company removed the vehicle from the lake. The chase remains under investigation by Chesterfield Township Police.
