The beagle "nipped" the Chelsea Area Fire Authority firefighter on the neck as the first responder stopped the canine from running across the frozen lake and nearby road.

SYLVAN TOWNSHIP., MINo good deed goes unpunished. A small dog running loose around an icy Chelsea-area lake bit his rescuer in the neck Friday, officials said.

Rescue crews were called about 10:50 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, for a report of a dog that had fallen through the ice on Cavanaugh Lake near the Waterloo Recreation Area, according to the Chelsea Area Fire Authority officials.

Crews arrived in the area and quickly determined the dog, a beagle, had not fallen through the ice, but instead was running around the frozen lake and in the roadway unattended, officials said.

A firefighter was able to get hold of the beagle and was “nipped” on the neck by the scared animal, according to authorities. The firefighter’s injuries were minor, but he was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out as a precaution, officials said.

Authorities discovered the dog’s owner is not a local resident, but someone who was in the area hunting previously and had lost the dog.

The dog was being cared for by county animal control officers until it can be reunited with its owners.

Huron Valley Ambulance assisted at the scene.
