Five field workers tried crossing the San Joaquin River in Mendota when their SUV became stuck in the water.

CAL FIRE firefighters rescued five field workers Tuesday after their SUV became submerged while trying to cross the San Joaquin River in Mendota.

The workers were attempting to get to the road on the other side by driving across a commonly used dirt bank, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. Despite the water level being above the path, the SUV's driver still tried to forge ahead and became stuck in the river.

As the vehicle became submerged, the workers escaped to the SUV's roof and waited there while firefighters arrived in a rescue boat. The men were given life jackets and safely taken to land.

Eventually, the SUV was towed away.
