Walker County firefighters and other first responders used a cable system to save men who were stranded overnight trying to cross a creek's fast-moving waters.

Georgia firefighters used a cable system to rescue two hikers Wednesday morning after they had been stuck overnight by a creek's fast-moving waters.

The hikers became stranded just before 9 a.m. by the rising water of East Armuchee Creek in Chattahoochee National Forest, according to Walker County's website. Walker County firefighters, as well as first responders from the Georgia Department of Corrections and deputies from the Walker County Sheriff's Office, to help the two men.

A high line cable system was set up across the creek, and firefighters used a quick release vest. Rescuers then stayed upstream to keep an eye out for debris, as well as downstream in case the hikers were swept away by the water.

It took a little less than an hour for firefighters to safely pull the men across the creek, and no one was hurt during the rescue.

The men had been hiking Tuesday in the forest and had planned to leave by sunset, according to authorities. They had to wait there overnight when they thought it wasn't safe to cross the creek in their truck, and poor cellphone service kept them from calling for help until the morning.
