A Wisconsin volunteer fire captain was killed by an allegedly intoxicated driver while helping a motorist who had been in an earlier accident New Year's Eve.

Capt. Christopher P. Truman of the Lake Mills Fire Department had been along a stretch of roadway called "The Beltline" near Monona when he pulled over to help the crashed driver late Monday, according to the department. He was hit by another vehicle while helping the driver in the original accident.

The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office told WMTV-TV that preliminary autopsy results indicated Truman died from injuries suffered in the crash. Samuel Patrick Cremers, the driver accused of hitting Truman, was arrested and charged with injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, the TV station added.

Truman, 46, had been with the Lake Mills Fire Department for 13 years and had been a captain for 10.
