Around 45 Chesapeake firefighters were battling a difficult, deep-seated blaze at the storage facility when the injury happened.

CHESAPEAKE  About 45 firefighters are battling a deep-seated fire at a Chesapeake storage facility that has affected roughly 100 individual units. One firefighter has been injured but is expected to make a full recovery.

A large number of storage spaces, which are "typically packed full of personal belongings," has made it a challenge to fully extinguish the blaze, Assistant Fire Marshal Steve Bradley said in a Sunday news release.

Bradley said the scene was still an active situation and was expected to be until later Sunday evening at least. The cause of the fire is unknown and the investigation is continuing.

Crews are using heavy equipment, provided by the Chesapeake Department of Public Works, to remove large debris from the fire at the Extra Space Storage facility, in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake.

Firefighters were called at 9:48 p.m., to the storage facility at 3264 South Military Highway, according to a fire department release.

The injured firefighter was treated and released from Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Bradley said.
