FDNY Will Add Bridge Gap Training after LODD

Commissioner Daniel Nigro discussed the additional training outside the wake for firefighter Steven Pollard, who fell more than 50 feet trying to jump the gap between lanes.

FDNY firefighters soon will begin training how to safely navigate the gaps between elevated bridges in New York City after firefighter Steven Pollard died in a fall over the weekend.

Commissioner Daniel Nigro told the New York Post that bridge gaps similar to the one Pollard fell through Sunday night are relatively new and "unusual" in the city. Pollard had been responding to a car accident call on a bridge in Brooklyn when he tried jumping the 3-foot-wide gap dividing the east and west lanes, plummeting more than 50 feet to the ground.

“We will try to ensure this never happens again in our city,” Nigro said Wednesday night at the wake for Pollard, 30. Hundreds of FDNY firefighters attended the wake, including Pollard's captain, Jim Quinn.

"This has been a real tough time for us these last few days. I had the opportunity of meeting with the family yesterday, and I shared with them what a great job they did raising their son," Quinn told the Post.

Visitation continued Thursday, and Pollard's funeral will be Friday.
