A Casper fire captain died Wednesday morning as the result of an off-duty accident, the agency announced.
Scott Low, 50, had worked for Casper Fire-EMS for 22 years, which followed a three-year stint as a wildland firefighter for the California Department of Forestry, according to an agency statement released Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Chief Tom Solberg described Low as a “pillar” of the department and said the captain had helped him understand the agency since the chief joined about a year ago.
“It’s hit most of our people as a surprise and a shock,” Solberg told the Star-Tribune by phone. “He’s certainly gonna be missed.”
Neither the written statement nor Solberg described the circumstances of Low’s death. Casper fire spokesman Dane Andersen on Wednesday afternoon said the agency had decided not to immediately provide further details regarding Low’s death except to say the accident took place in Natrona County.
As a captain, Low headed Engine 6, based out of the agency’s Paradise Valley station. He is survived by his wife, whom the agency did not name in order to provide her privacy.
“(Low) was an avid outdoorsman and fly fisherman,” the release stated. “His presence, laughter and sense of humor will be dearly missed by his fellow firefighters and friends.”
Funeral arrangements are pending, and Andersen said the agency will provide further details about arrangements as they are made.
