A Milan Township firefighter was responding to an accident call in his personal vehicle, which had lights and sirens attached and running, when the collision happened.

A woman was injured Saturday morning after a van collided with a emergency vehicle on its way to another accident.

Tyler Petersen, 20, who serves as a Milan Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter, was off duty when he received the call to an accident on Ohio 13, just south of the Ohio Turnpike, according to a report from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said. At about 11 a.m. Petersen was driving his personal vehicle, which had lights and sirens attached and activated, when he collided with a Grand Caravan van at the intersection of U.S. 250 and Ohio 113, in Milan. The van was driven by David McWhorter, 44, of Ontario.

McWhorter’s wife, Jennifer, the front passenger in the van, sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Fisher-Titus Medical Center. The van had four other passengers, all minors. However, no other injuries were sustained in the crash, deputies said.

No traffic citations were issued at the scene, deputies said.

However, the matter has been sent to the law director’s office for further consideration.
