Aug. 4--SPRINGFIELD -- Two firefighters were injured and eight residents were displaced in a fire in a two-family home late Saturday night.

When firefighters arrived at 11:49 p.m., heavy fire was coming from the first floor and the flames were spreading to the second floor, said Capt. Brian Tetreault, commander of the Fire Department's Arson and Bomb Squad.

Two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze at 7-9 Noel St. One was treated at the scene for dehydration and a second was brought to the hospital for treatment for an unknown injury, he said.

The roof and attic were in flames when firefighters arrived. Three residents from the first floor and five from the second were all able to escape safely. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross of Western Massachusetts, Tetreault said.

The residents were able to escape with family pets, with the exception of one cat. That animal, found on the second floor, was resuscitated by firefighters, he said.

The Arson and Bomb Squad determined the fire was caused by an unattended candle on the first floor. The blaze caused about $80,000 in damage, he said.
