MI Firefighter Killed in Off-Duty Tractor Crash

CAMBRIA TWP., MIA volunteer Reading firefighter died in an incident with a tractor Saturday.

Robert Berger, 50, was operating a New Holland tractor with a backhoe attachment to dig a hole in the 2400 block of S. Sand Lake Road around 3:20 p.m. Saturday, the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office said.

Berger was pinned while operating the backhoe, police said. First responders administered aid, but Berger was pronounced dead at the scene, they said.

The incident is under investigation by the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office. Montgomery Fire and Rescue, Hillsdale Rural Fire Department, Reading Emergency Unit and Hillsdale County Victim Services assisted at the scene.
