Apply for a Travel Stipend for a Hazmat Train-the-Trainer Event

Nov. 30, 2023
The NVFC will grant 10 NVFC members with stipends that reimburse up to $500 of eligible travel-related expenses.

Through a U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) SPST grant, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is offering hazmat train-the-trainer events across the U.S. To help more people attend these important trainings, the NVFC will grant 10 NVFC members with stipends that reimburse up to $500 of eligible travel-related expenses. Applications are due by January 2.

The Partners in Training (PIT) Crew program helps first responders gain the knowledge and skills they need to train others in their communities on hazmat safety and response. Through the partnership, the NVFC is providing in-person training opportunities across the U.S. at no cost to departments. Experienced hazmat trainers and those new to the field are encouraged to attend. Each event offers one or more courses on topics such as teaching hazmat on a budget, risk-based hazmat training, and instructor training for flammable gases, flammable liquids, ammonia, and more. Courses provide both basic instructional techniques as well as subject matter training. Click here for a full course listing and to download the course catalog.

Travel stipends reimburse up to $500 of travel-related expenses to attend a PIT Crew event, including hotel, transportation (airfare, mileage, cab/shuttle/rideshare), and any applicable registration fees. Stipend recipients can choose between the six training locations offered in 2024 (MO, NH, NY, TX, WA, and WV). Applicants must submit a reference letter from a fellow department member or city official who can verify their capacity to benefit from the training. This opportunity is open to NVFC members; if you are not a member, join here to be eligible. Learn more and apply for the travel stipend here
