An Atlanta firefighter who lost his leg in an on-duty crash last month was released from a rehabilitation center Friday.

Sgt. Darrow Harden, 47, was greeted by his colleagues in the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department as he left the Shepherd Center, WXIA-TV reports. He had been at the rehab center for more than a month.

"Members of his battalion transported him via his unit’s engine back to his home in Cobb County," the Sheperd Center stated on Twitter. "Family and friends were on hand for the joyful event."

Harden was seriously injured May 12 as he was exiting an apparatus at the scene of a rollover accident on Interstate 85. That's when a 2009 Pontiac G5 hydproplaned and hit him. At the time, fire officials said Harden was immediately struck as he was stepping off the apparatus, which was moving into a blocking position.

The 35-year-old driver of the Pontiac was charged with failure to maintain a lane, driving too fast for conditions and failure to obey the move-over law, according to WXIA.

Although he was discharged from the rehab center, Harden still has a long recovery, department officials told the TV station. Physical therapy is next for the seven-year veteran firefighter.
