Attempted Murder Charges in Stabbing of FL Firefighters

A 38-year-old man pleaded not guilty to the upgraded charges after he allegedly attacked two Jacksonville firefighters with a box cutter during a call last month.

Charges have been upgraded against a man accused of stabbing two Florida firefighters during an emergency call last month.

Tony Benard Harris, 38, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the first degree with a weapon, as well as a single count of resisting an officer, WTLV-TV reports. He originally faced two counts of aggravated battery on a firefighter stemming from the incident.

According to authorities, Jacksonville firefighters responded to Harris' call complaining of kidney pains at about 10 p.m. Oct. 8. While in the ambulance, Harris allegedly began acting aggressively after hearing radio chatter that a woman was being taken to the hospital, and trying to explain that he wasn't a woman.

Harris then allegedly pulled a box cutter from Capt. Latorrence Norris' pocket and began stabbing the firefighter. The driver—firefighter Vinnie Harper—pulled over the ambulance near the hospital and went to the back of the ambulance to try to stop the attack.

Police eventually arrived at the scene and Harris was taken into custody. Norris' injuries from the attack required a short hospital stay, while Harper, who was stabbed in his right leg, was treated and released the following day.

Harris pleaded not guilty to the upgraded charges Tuesday, according to WTLV. He is being held in Duval County Jail on $1.02 million bond, and his next court date is Jan. 8.
