OH Fire Department Unveils New Fallen FFs Memorial

"A lot of those people on the wall, none of us have ever met. … But they’re still part of our fire department family," said a Newark firefighter about the memorial.

An Ohio fire department has unveiled a new permanent display to honor its fallen firefighters.

Newark Division of Fire's new memorial at its Station 1 features the plaques of eight firefighters who lost their lives, along with dates and a description, WCMH-TV reports. A thin red line also is painted along the wall to emphasize the memorial.

“A lot of those people on the wall, none of us have ever met. They’re from the early 1900s, 1800s,” firefighter Kevin Garwick told the TV station. “But they’re still part of our fire department family and part of our history.”

A graphic designer created the look of the memorial, and Capt. Doug Vermaaten researched the histories of the fallen firefighters. Newark's firefighters union also contributed $15,000 to the memorial.

“It’s a very real, constant reminder that we all need to watch out for one another and take care of each other,” Lt. Neal Murphy told WCMH.
