At 8:36 p.m.,, Adams County 911 began receiving calls for a building fire. A pre-alert was sounded for Southeastern Adams Volunteer Emergency Services (SAVES) in Box 29, McSherrystown Boro, 144 Main St for an apartment building fire with reports of people trapped.

Chief Weaver and Deputy Chief Hagerman reported heavy smoke and fire showing from Side Delta, the rear apartments. Crews on Engine 29 and Quint 29 began fire attack and searching with results turning up negative. All occupants made it out prior to arrival of the fire department with the help of civilians.

Quint 29 put its 75-foot aerial ladder into service on Side Bravo. Crews obtained a water source from a hydrant within 200 feet from the scene.

Chief 29 placed the fire under control at 9:18. One firefighter and one building occupant were transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire has been determined to have been arson. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's Office, and McSherrystown Borough Police are handling the investigation.
