FL Firefighters Moved Again Over Possible Mold

After returning to their station a month ago, Riviera Beach firefighters began experiencing symptoms and smelling an odor at the facility last week.

Florida firefighters who returned to the fire station they had been moved out of months ago over mold issues have been relocated again.

After returning to Station 88 a month ago, members of the Riviera Beach Fire Department found issues last week with the air plenum that air ducts run into at the facility, WPTV-TV reports. By Saturday, employees began suffering symptoms and smelling an odor.

"There were people that said there was a little bit of eye irritation and some coughing," Interim Fire Chief John Curd told the WPTV. "Not knowing what that was, and with everybody’s different levels of sensitivity, to me it didn’t matter what it was, if it was an issue for them it was an issue for me."

Firefighters were working out of Station 88 during the day, but they were sleeping at other stations. Employees were moved out of the station in March after complaining about symptoms and at least nine people testing positive for mold exposure, according to WPTV.

In April, Riviera firefighters at Station 86 were moved out after tests found high concentrations of "unknown particulates" in the air.
