(New York-WABC, October 22, 2001) -- It's a ritual that has a new meaning. Mayor Giuliani welcomed the first class of firefighter students to start their training since the World Trade Center disaster. Anthony Johnson reports.
The Fire Academy is located on Randall's Island. This is where 700 future firefighters are looking to join the ranks of New York's Bravest.
The 307 probational firefighters are the first class of future graduates since the tragedy at the World Trade Center. Even though many are still mourning, these men have been congratulated for helping to rebuild the department.
Mayor Giuliani: "This is a great time to join the department. There has never been a time when the morale, the strength and the purpose of the fire department has been better. Joining now is a wonderful statement to the community."
While the message to these men was upbeat, there were flashes of emotion. City leaders and officials continue to attend funerals of firefighters, officials and police officers who died on September 11th at the World Trade Center.
Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen: "This is a strange time for me to swear you in. It is an uneasy feeling and different. And yet, it is not any different from the past as far as what will be expected of you."
Von Essen says the department is still trying to fill its ranks after suffering such a devastating loss nearly six weeks ago. These men were embarking on the quest to become our future heroes.
Future Firefighter: "I feel proud. I feel honored. I have a bunch of different emotions. I hope I can live up to their courage."
These men know that they are following in quite a legacy.
