Kansas City Reflects On Sept. 11
Gatherings, Services Held Throughout Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In every part of the metro Wednesday, thousands of Kansas Citians in one way or another reflected on what happened a year ago on Sept. 11.
 A church's bell tolled in Independence to mark the times planes struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
In downtown Kansas City, people of different faiths gathered to grieve, pray and unite.
"In the face of disaster, we yet proclaim hope," an official said of the day.
 In Overland Park, Kan., the name of each victim killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was read aloud at the Jewish Community Center campus. The continuous reading of the victims' names started at 8 a.m. and was expected to continue into the evening.
Throughout the day, people in the faith community have been giving things to their congregations, like flags, communion, even tiny stones to represent tears shed in the last year. But KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that their greatest gift on this anniversary was comfort.
"I came to church this morning because I believe in hope," a woman said.
"People have been through a hard time and we need to heal," another woman said.
