Victims Honored With Massachusetts 21-Gun Salute

Battleship Fires Guns In Tribute

Story by turnto10.com

FALL RIVER, Mass. -- A symbol of America's military might was the setting Wednesday for a ceremony that reminded the country just how vulnerable it is.

USS Massachusetts

The USS Massachusetts fired a 21-gun salute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center.

Residents and officials gathered at Heritage State Park for a memorial service and a tree-planting ceremony.

Across town, city police officers marched to a park where they gathered to pray. They know their chosen profession can often become a sacrifice.

"And if according to your will I have to lose my life, please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. Amen," said one officer in prayer.

A candlelight vigil will be held at Battleship Cove at 7 p.m.
