September 12, 2002 -- West 100th Street, home to the FDNY's Engine 76 and Ladder 22, and the NYPD's 24th Precinct station house, was the scene of poignant ceremonies yesterday, with cops and firefighters reading aloud the names of fallen comrades and observing a minute of silence.
But the somber stillness in the ranks of blue was interrupted by the cackle of the radio - and then off raced the engine.
"That brought us back to the reality of everyday life right then and there," said Fire Capt. Paul Jirak.
It took a little longer for the cops on duty next door to get back to normal, according to Sgt. John Grimpel, the desk officer.
