September 8, 2002 -- A police helicopter chased a suspicious plane flying low near the United Nations yesterday - only to find a Fire Department paramedic at the controls, cops said.
A police technical team spotted the low-flying craft at around 5:15 p.m. and alerted the Aviation Unit, which followed the Piper single-engine craft to its destination, Essex County Airport in New Jersey.
The pilot and plane owner was identified as Amon Mohammed, a medic assigned to the FDNY's dignitary-protection detail, police said.
Mohammed, who lives in East Stroudsburg, Pa., was involved with the preparation for events related to this week's 9/11 remembrances, but was off-duty yesterday, said cops.
Cops said Mohammed's radio was tuned to the wrong frequency.
