Aug. 15--An 84-year-old man died and two firefighters were injured in a fire in the West Side's South Austin neighborhood early this morning, officials said.

Jerry Jones, of the 800 block of North Parkside Avenue, was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The man suffered from smoke inhalation and was found by fire personnel, officials said.

Aug. 13--Two city firefighters were injured and a family was displaced after a fire ripped through two row houses in the 1000 block of Franklin Street on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Reading firefighters Jason Batz and Sean Hart drove themselves to Reading Hospital in a fire engine after they were injured, Fire Chief William H. Rehr III said.

Batz sought treatment for a puncture wound to a hand and Hart for debris in his eyes, Rehr said.

Three people were reported hospitalized, including two volunteer firefighters, following an early morning blaze at a two-story home in Islip Thursday, fire officials said.

None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Suffolk County fire officials said the fire at the home on Princeton Street, near the intersection with Freeman Avenue, was reported at 5:10 a.m.

Firefighters from Islip, Islip Terrace, Brentwood and Bay Shore arrived to find the fire burning on the second floor.

Aug. 10--Four firefighters were injured Monday morning when their fire truck collided with a sedan in East Germantown.

A pumper from Engine 51 was responding to a report of a fire just before noon when it struck the car at 20th Street and Church Lane.

The firefighters and the driver of the car were transported to local hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, said Capt. Richard Davis, a Fire Department spokesman.
