Nov. 5--An elderly couple died this morning in a house fire in Coalton in Jackson County.
Raymond Kimbleton, 70, and his wife Phyllis, 69, died in the fire, said Sheriff John Shasteen.
Deputy Tony Perdue was on patrol about 5 a.m. when he noticed smoke and flames coming from the house at 21 Broadway St., the sheriff said.
Unable to enter due to heavy smoke, the deputy raced around the house knocking on doors and windows with his flashlight in an attempt to alert the Kimbletons, Shasteen said.
Coalton firefighters arrived within six minutes, but the couple was dead by the time firefighters entered the house, he said.
The fire appeared to start in the living room of the house, but the cause has not been determined, said Shane Cartmill, spokesman for the state fire marshal's office.
No smoke detectors have been found in the single-family dwelling, he said.
Coalton is about 65 miles southeast of Columbus.
