Seattle Firefighters Tackle Ship Blaze
SEATTLE --
Nearly 100 Seattle firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire aboard a fishing vessel in the ship canal early Sunday morning, the Seattle Fire Department reported.
Firefighters responded to the 1300 block of West Nickerson Street where the fishing vessel Arctic Dawn was engulfed in flames and heavy smoke filled the air.
The first alarm came at 1:51 a.m. Two more alarms followed, and by 2:40 a.m. almost 100 firefighters, including a fireboat and police boat, were battling the blaze.
The Seattle Fire Department reported that one person had been on the boat, but he was able to get off the boat on his own and did not sustain any injuries.
A nearby vessel, the Kodiak, was threatened by the fire, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading.
The Seattle Fire Department reported that most of the fire damage occurred on the superstructure of the vessel, but the damage did not spread below the deck of the boat.
Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and they have not released an estimate of the damage.
The State Department of Ecology and Coast Guard were also on scene to monitor for potential environmental hazards, though no environmental damage has been reported.
The Arctic Dawn was featured on the pilot of the TV show, "Deadliest Catch."
Fire units remained on the scene throughout the morning.
