Georgia County Promises Fire, Police Retirements Won't Hurt Safety

DECATUR, Ga. -- DeKalb County's chief financial officer said that 828 early retirements will save the county approximately $30 million. DECATUR, Ga. --

DeKalb County's chief financial officer said that 828 early retirements will save the county approximately $30 million. However, that savings will be reduced since the county plans to fill a number of the open positions.

Director of Finance Michael Bell told CBS Atlanta that the total estimated savings from the buyouts is $7 million.

"It gives us some sufficient breathing room," said Bell.

The open positions that will be filled include 171 police officers, firefighters and sheriff's deputies.

"Certainly when you consider the total number in the police, fire and sheriff's department, it's not that great of a percentage," said Bell. "But yes, there will be emphasis on refilling those sworn positions."

DeKalb County Public Safety Director William Miller told CBS Atlanta Tuesday that he is always concerned about public safety.

"We could be short some people out on the street but again, we just have to fill them in with some new, young, energetic employees the best we can, said Miller.

DeKalb County offered county employees early retirement in an effort to slash $100 million from its budget. The goal is to avoid firing workers.

Asked if layoffs will be avoided by the early retirements, Bell told CBS Atlanta, "We're not absolutely sure at this point, but it certainly reduces the probability that there would be any reduction in force."

The last day on the job for most of those who opt for early retirement is May 31.
