Baltimore City Fire Department Begins Health, Wellness and Fitness Program.
Baltimore, Md. -- On Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Sheila Dixon, Fire Chief James Clack and members of the Baltimore City Fire Department kicked off its "Health, Wellness and Fitness" program. In conjunction with Mayor Dixon's "Fit Baltimore Campaign", Baltimore City Firefighters have decided to challenge Mayor Dixon's campaign to become more fit and healthy in 2009. The event was held at the Oldtown fire station located at 1100 Hillen Street.
Working in a demanding, fast paced and often stressful environment creates a great deal of stress on the human body. "In order to relieve this stress, one must exercise, get plenty of rest and, most importantly, eat healthy", said Mayor Dixon. For firefighters this can be quite a challenge.
To highlight the kick-off the department invited M. Dominique Ashen, PhD, CRNP from Johns Hopkins University Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, Executive Chef Marcus Olson of the Brass Elephant Restaurant & Caterers in Mount Vernon and Krissy Kueter and Mike Brown of Crossfit at Bare Hills. These representatives were invited to share their expertise in the area of health and fitness as well as the benefits to members of the department.
To assist members with creating a healthy and fit lifestyle, we've teamed up with a premiere Baltimore restaurant, the Brass Elephant and, Executive Chef Marcus Olson in a wellness, health and fitness campaign.
The purpose of this campaign is to educate members on proper nutrition, dietary supplements, fitness and food preparation. Chef Olson will meet with members at each Baltimore fire station to learn their eating habits, common foods they consume, variety of ways they prepare meals and provide feedback to help them foster positive and healthier lifestyles. To assist members
Chef Olson held an interactive session to demonstrate proper food preparation techniques, how to create 30 minute meals that include all the healthy food groups, as well as challenge members to perform the same techniques in his own professional kitchen at the Brass Elephant & Caterers restaurant in historic Mount Vernon.
"Fit Firefighters" for healthy living will hold weekly sessions at fire stations throughout the city.
