Firefighters across the nation were hurt in vehicle collisions, fire ground operations, non-emergency incidents and training last year, an NFPA study shows.

Following an analysis of data, the NFPA researchers estimated that 80,100 firefighters were injured in 2007, a four percent decline over the previous year.

Firefighters in the Northeast sustained the highest number of fire ground injuries at a rate two times greater than other regions, according to the study.

The leading injuries occurring during a fire operation included strain, sprains and muscular pain, cuts and other wounds.

The projections were made following information garnered from fire officials who participated in the NFPA Survey for the U.S. Fire Experience.
