Explosion, Fire Destroys Texas Condo
HOUSTON --
An explosion and fire destroyed a northwest Harris County condominium on Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The two-alarm blaze broke out at a complex on Place Rebecca Lane near Kuykendahl Road at about 5:45 a.m.
Homeowners said flames consumed the unit after there was an explosion in an upstairs bedroom.
"We know we had been having problems," homeowner Chris Bibby said. "There were problems with all the electric outlets and everything inside the house. We've been telling the homeowner's association about it and everything, but we didn't know this would happen."
The fire destroyed Bibby's unit and damaged two neighboring condos.
Ponderosa Fire Department Chief Fred Windisch said the fire spread through the attic.
"Once the fire gets a foothold in the attic and starts moving there's just nothing we can do," he said. "It's just too big."
A firefighter twisted her ankle while battling the flames. She was expected to recover.
Bibby said that having fire insurance did not give him much peace of mind.
"Everything we owned of anything, there's really nothing that they can save from it," he said.
