A man in Ormond Beach, Fla., was critically injured Wednesday night when his mobile home exploded while he was inside, according to Local 6 News.

Firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at a home located on H Avenue in Ormond Beach.

When fire crews arrived, they found the homeowner, Robert Smith, injured with burns over 60 percent of his body.

"It was like his skin was peeling off in large pieces," witness Savannah Cobb said. "His hair was singed and his glasses were falling off and they were broken and were all charcoaled up."

"I heard the explosion, it was like a big huge pop," witness Angela Wiley said.

"There were propane tanks on the west side of the mobile home that were on fire," Volusia County Fire Services spokeswoman Shelley Szafraniec said. "But they were only venting to release the pressure which produced a flame."

Smith's neighbors said he was going through a bad break up and had attempted suicide in the past.

Smith was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the fire.
