Brush Fires Test Florida Firefighters

Weather conditions will allow the threat to persist

At least nine Brevard County brush fires -- the two largest each charring 25 to 30 acres in separate cities -- tested firefighters Sunday, and in some instances, threatened homes, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

Tiny black debris drifted from the 30-acre fire in a wooded area near West Melbourne and wafted around 31-year-old Tanya Wallace.

"This fire has made a whole mess of West Melbourne. This is crazy," Wallace said as she stood on smoke-filled Vine Street.

Another large fire, which burned an estimated 25 acres, occurred in north Melbourne near the Pineda Crossing subdivision, Florida Today reported.

No one was hurt in any of the fires, officials said.

They occurred across Brevard: four small fires consuming lots in Palm Bay, a fire less than an acre along Parkway Drive in Melbourne, one in Rockledge near Wuesthoff Medical Center and another in Melbourne Village.

Weather conditions aren't going to help prevent fires anytime soon either, the report said.

It won't be until some time in May when conditions are expected to change from dry days to humid summer days, said Bob Wimmer, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Melbourne.

Brevard County has gone months with limited rainfall, leaving the landscape parched and susceptible to brush-gobbling fires that quickly spread amid windy conditions.
