LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. --

A woman and two children escaped a fire Monday, but their two pet dogs did not get out of the building in time.

Broward Sheriffs Office's Department of Fire Rescue extinguished the fire that started shortly after 11 a.m. in the bedroom of an upstairs apartment.

The apartment is located above the Reflections beachwear store.

Fire Rescue said the blaze was quickly brought under control and damage was confined to the one apartment.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
