Fire investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a blaze that destroyed a southeast Atlanta home and sent the woman living there to the hospital.

The fire broke out around midnight at the home on Baywood Drive. Neighbor Chris Wherry said that he heard a commotion, ran to his window, and saw the fire consuming the house.

He then ran outside and noticed the man who lived in the burning home struggling to unlock the door while his wife was trapped inside.

"She was just hollering inside, 'Rufus pull me out -- I'm burning, I'm burning,'" Wherry said.

"Finally we went inside and she was right at the door lying on the floor, and I pulled her out, brought her to the street and asked if she was ok. She said she was burning on the shoulder."

Authorities said the woman was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a minor burn and suffering from smoke inhalation. Her condition was not known.

Firefighters said the house, which was little more than a burned-out frame, is a total loss.

Investigators have not said whether they think it was an accident or an act of arson.
