UNION CITY, N.J.-- A five-alarm fire tore through a residential building in Union City, New Jersey, Thursday.

About eight firefighters were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and exhaustion while battling the blaze, Mayor Brian Stack said.

No other injuries were reported.

The "stubborn" fire forced the evacuation of the building, which had a store on the street level and four apartments above, Stack said.

The families were taken to a nearby school while emergency workers arranged shelter for them, Stack said.
