A southeast Houston warehouse was evacuated after a fatal explosion on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Precinct 6 Deputy Constables said the explosion happened in the manufacturing area of American Elastomer Products, a pipe fitting company, on Polk Street near Lansing Street at about 11:30 a.m.

One person was killed, officials said.

Deputies said more than 40 people were evacuated from the building.

The explosion ripped the building's walls and windows apart.

Residents said the blast was felt up to a mile away.

Other buildings in the industrial park sustained damage, officials said.

Officials said the Occupational Safety Health Administration has been notified.
