Man Killed in Mountain View, California Fire
A man was killed last night when a fire destroyed a Mountain View mobile home, the city's emergency services coordinator said today.
Spokesman Lynn Brown said firefighters received a call at about 11:10 p.m. that a smoke alarm was sounding in a mobile home at 501 Moorpark Way, near the intersection of highways 237 and 85. Although the first engine arrived in about three minutes, the single-wide mobile home, Unit 89, smoke and flames were already showing, Brown said.
An unidentified man who is thought to be under 40 years old was found inside. Firefighters pulled the man out of the burning home, but he was already dead, Brown said.
''The unfortunate thing is mobile homes . . . particularly older ones, get going pretty well, and they tend to give off lots of toxic smoke,'' Brown said.
Although the mobile homes are closely packed, firefighters managed to keep the flames and embers from igniting other fires.
