Two Bodies Discovered In Bronx, New York City Fire Aftermath
(Longwood, The Bronx -WABC, Feb. 16, 2005) -- There was a gruesome discovery in the burned out shell of a building in the Bronx.
Newscopter Seven was over the smokey fire that destroyed the building yesterday in the Longwood section.
Authorities initially thought the structure was vacant but when workers went in today to clean up the rubble they found two human bodies.
The identities of those people is not known at this hour.
Crews were working to clear debris after a fire yesterday gutted a row of abandoned stores. The three alarm fire is considered suspicious because of how quickly it spread. The flames were so intense firefighters simply could not go inside and look for victims. It was strictly what the FDNY calls "an exterior attack."
Neighborhood residents say the lot on the corner of Westchester and Longwood Avenues was a known drug location. It was also common knowledge that a handful of people had converted the basement into a living space, complete with electricity, heat, and even television.
Investigators will search the entire site to make sure there aren't any additional victims inside. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.
