Man Charged in Death of New York Fire Chief

A 53-year-old man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after his car skidded, striking and killing the village fire chief who was tending a flower bed with his wife near an intersection in northern New York.

GLEN PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- A 53-year-old man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after his car skidded, striking and killing the village fire chief who was tending a flower bed with his wife near an intersection in northern New York.

Wayne Mlotkiewicz, of Dexter, was also charged with driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and traffic infractions, police said. He was jailed in Jefferson County with bail set at $5,000. According to court records, he was convicted of driving while impaired in 2001 and 2003.

Police said 48-year-old Frank Postorino, deputy mayor and fire chief in Glen Park, 67 miles north of Syracuse, was hit by Mlotkiewicz's car shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday and died from his injuries. Joan Postorino, 52, was taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where she was listed in critical condition.
