UNIONTOWN, Ala. (AP) -- Flames engulfed a trailer home early Wednesday, killing a mother and her four young children.

Police Chief Donald Rhodes said a female relative tried unsuccessfully to get into the trailer to save the family. The cause of the blaze was not known; the state fire marshal's office was investigating.

The victims were identified as Viola Fikes, 24, and her children: Emmanuel Lane, 9; Wyquise Fikes, 6; Shakerria Ward, 4; and 1-year-old Sekira Fikes.

Uniontown is about 90 miles west of Montgomery.
