Firefighters know, given the risks of their profession, that the next person they rescue might be one of their own - even in their own firehouse.

Last month, three Jersey City firefighters kept their cool when a fellow firefighter suffered a heart attack shortly after returning from a run. Now, after seven defibrillator shocks and heart surgery, Firefighter Thomas Galvin is back home with his family.

"I thank all the guys," said Galvin, 49, who said his faith in his fellow firefighters left him little surprised they brought him back from the brink.
