Feb. 29--A 20-year-old Taylor man was killed when his garage exploded Tuesday night. Officials have not released his name but said he died shortly after 8 p.m. in the 5900 block of McGuire Street, near Van Born and South Beech Daly roads.

Two other people were in the garage with the man and told investigators the explosion happened after somebody poured gasoline on a wood-burning stove in the garage, Taylor police said in a news release.

A 19-year-old-woman and a 17-year-old man, both from Taylor, survived the blast and were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment.

The two teens at the hospital are receiving care for burn wounds and were friends of the man killed, Taylor Fire Chief Bob Tompos said. Their condition was not known this morning.

It's unclear who put the gasoline on the fire and explosion remains under investigation, he said.

"What happens with gasoline is the vapors will creep out of whatever container they're in," Tompos said. "Those invisible gasoline vapors will creep along the floor."

The vapors are heavier than air so they go to the lowest spot and will ignite all at once with an ignition source, he said.

Dearborn Heights and Romulus fire departments assisted the Taylor fire department.
