DANBURY, Conn. -- One man was killed and five others injured in a fire that ripped through a multi-family home on Harding Place early Sunday morning, fire officials said.
Nine fire units responded to 16 Harding Place at 2:02 a.m. Flames were shooting out of the windows of the first floor, where most of the damage occurred, Assistant Fire Chief Bernie Meehan said.
An elderly man, a first-floor resident of the home, was pronounced dead at the scene, Meehan said. Authorities are withholding his identity until his family members are notified.
Five other people were inside the home when the fire broke out. Four of those residents were brought to Danbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and were released Sunday morning, Meehan said. The fifth victim -- a woman -- remained at the hospital late Sunday morning with traces of smoke inhalation.
Her condition was not immediately available Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters placed the blaze under control at 2:40 a.m. The two-story building -- which is managed by Councilman Paul Rotello -- was deemed it uninhabitable by the town building inspector.
No firefighters were injured, Meehan said.
Authorities were working Sunday to identify the cause and origin of the fire.
Mayor Mark Boughton said each of the people who have been displaced from the house have arranged lodging with friends or family members. Paul Shipman, spokesman fo the American Red Cross, said the agency is also working with the residents to provide food and other necessary goods.
