Stanton volunteer firefighter Danny Ireton died and firefighter Allan Carby was seriously injured Wednesday when their apparatus was in an accident with a tractor-trailer as they headed to another crash.

A Texas firefighter was killed and another was seriously injured in an accident on their way to a call Wednesday.

Martin County/City of Stanton Volunteer Fire Department crews were responding to a crash along FM 829 highway, the Martin County Messenger reported on its Facebook page. Firefighters Danny Ireton and Allan Carby were headed to the incident when their apparatus was involved in an accident with a tractor-trailer.

Ireton, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Carby was taken to the hospital in stable condition, the U.S. Fire Administration stated in an alert. Although no details were released concerning the nature of Carby's injuries, he faces "surgeries and a long recovery," according to an online update by the department.

The Messenger described the firefighters as "pillars of the Stanton Community."

"Our hearts are broken and we covet your prayers," the department stated.

It's not clear if the driver of the tractor-trailer also was injured in the accident.
