A battalion chief with Thomasville Fire and Rescue died Feb. 9 following a 24-hour shift.
Mark Holt, 50, began a 24-hour shift on Feb. 7, and in the early morning hours of Feb. 9, he was found unresponsive by a family member at his house.
Emergency crews responded and performed CPR but he was pronounced deceased at his home a short time later from an apparent heart attack, according to a U.S. Fire Administration press release.
He responded to a fire call during his shift.
Holt began his career at the Fair Grove Fire Department in the late 1980s.
More recently, he served as the battalion chief for the Thomasville Fire Department, WFMY 2 News reported.
Thomasville Interim Fire Chief Jason Myers said Holt was an inspirational leader that firefighters naturally gravitated to. He served on various committees and was always willing to take on new projects to better the organization.
