South Dakota Fire Gains Crews' Attention
D CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A fire that broke out Sunday about two miles north of Mount Rushmore has been slowed by rain, and crews hoped to finish a defensive ring around the perimeter of the blaze on Monday.
The Old Hill City Road Fire has consumed about 150 acres and was burning south of Highway 16.
Nick Fletcher, a fire information officer, said all evacuations and closures in the area have been lifted. Residents, however, were advised to remain diligent and be cautious on local roads.
About 70 firefighters were assigned to the blaze.
People living in the area along Highway 16A from Highway 16 to Keystone were under a voluntary evacuation notice Sunday evening, and a section of Highway 16 was closed.
Authorities said about 20 structures initially were threatened by the fire, which reportedly started after a tree fell onto a power line.
