The large, fast-moving blaze at a Lawrence home forced crews outside to battle the flames, which burned through the roof and collapsed the building's front side.

A Massachusetts firefighter was hurt helping to put out a large blaze at a three-family home Wednesday.

Crews responded to the fire at a triple-decker house in Lawrence at around 9:45 a.m., WBZ-TV reports. They began fighting the blaze from inside the residence, but the fast-moving flames burned through the roof and forced firefighters outside before it became unsafe.

“They made a valiant attempt to stop it, but it just got too advanced too fast,” Deputy Fire Chief Jack Meaney told WBZ.

At around noon, the fire reignited, and residents in the neighborhood were told to evacuate as firefighters continued their efforts, WHDH-TV reports. Eventually, the fire collapsed the front side of the house, and the debris crashed down on cars parked in the street. No one was injured by the wreckage.

Details about how the firefighter was hurt and the extent of his injuries were not released. He was taken to the hospital, but his condition wasn't given.

Those inside the building were able to safely escape the blaze. The first and third floors had been rented out, and the owner, who bought the building only three days ago, was intending to move into the first unit, WBZ added.
