Dozens of firefighters worked as temperatures dropped Saturday night while flames consumed a Merrillville apartment building.
One person was injured in the three-alarm fire, offcials told CBS Chicago.
It broke out in the basement laundry room, according to fire officials. The fire spread throught the two-story building and into the attic, Merrillville Fire Chief Ed Yerga explained.
Neighbors told the television station that high winds fanned the fire from one end of the building to the other.
"Every fire department in Lake County has come out to help put this fire out," said Ward 2 council member Shauna Haynes-Edwards.
Freezing temperatures hampered firefighters as ice built up on the streets and firefighter's equipment.
Two dozen families were displaced by the fire.
