The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) and International Fire Service Training Association at Fire Protection Publications, Oklahoma State University (IFSTA/FPP/OSU) are accepting nominations for the Dr. Anne W. Phillips Award for Leadership in Fire Safety Education. Established in 2007, the Phillips Award is presented annually at the National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner for outstanding achievements in public fire safety education.

Dr. Phillips was a member of the National Commission on Fire Prevention and Control that wrote America Burning, the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on our nation’s fire problem that justified the need for a greater federal role in fire prevention and life safety. As a member of the Commission, Dr. Phillips authored the Minority Report that pushed the Commission to recognize the important role of prevention in reducing fire injury and death. Throughout her life, Dr. Phillips demonstrated an unwavering dedication to fire prevention and preparedness as the basis to strengthen fire safety education across the country. Her goal was to end fire deaths and burn injuries.

The award strives to keep the work and spirit of Dr. Phillips alive by recognizing public fire safety leaders who have made significant contributions throughout their careers to the advancement of public fire safety education on the national level throughout their careers.

The award presentation will take place at the 31st Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner on April 25, 2019 in Washington, DC. Hosted by the Congressional Fire Services Institute, the Dinner culminates a two-day program attended by 1,500 state and national fire service leaders who will spend their time in Washington, DC attending seminars and meeting with the members of Congress.
